Saw Star Trek last night. Had no idea it was still in theaters. It was ah-mah-zing. Man, I'd boldly go anywhere with that crew... what a good-lookin' bunch of people. Also, you know, tons of fun aside from the attractiveness.
Also, friends visiting from Vermont = doubleplusgood.
Saw naked bikeriders twice on the less-than-ten-minute walk to the library. They encouraged me to join, I said I didn't have a bike. One man said, "you can borrow mine!" I politely declined. |

Oh, LiveJournal. I hate to neglect you so, after so many, many years. I feel like I am abandoning a child. Stupid lack of reliable internet.
Friday night a friend from high school was supposed to call, but got eaten by a final paper instead. But the evening was far from a total loss, for I was armed with a fake mustache and two lovely ladies. We hit up a popular Capital Hill bar, where Traci insisted that this would be a fabulous night, free of being hit-on, since, y'know, mustaches. She was, of course, completely and utterly wrong. Nothing says "conversational in" with somebody like asking why they have fake facial hair on.
After being approached by numerous males, having our picture taken by and with several strangers and being told about all kinds of mustache-related events, I decided that what I really needed was a burrito. While ordering, I was told by an incredibly drunk woman that I was the only girl she'd ever met who "looked hot with a mustache". Which made me wonder a little about where she hangs out.
Mustache, mustache, mustache. I just enjoy typing that word. If you can't tell.
In other news, I've read thirty books this year, of varying length and complexity. Also, I will be in good ole Alaska from July 15-21. Plan accordingly. |

Why do I always snork things out my nose? I'm in a coffee shop, and just as I was taking a sip of my drink, I somehow managed to choke on it and spray it everywhere. Now there's that niggling little feeling of acid in the back of my throat and nose. Icky.
My library holds came up with two Coen brothers movies: Fargo, which I've never seen, and O Brother, Where Art Thou? since my friend and I were going to watch it a few weeks ago, but were thwarted by lack of availability. Perhaps I need to have a mini film fest. But perhaps not until after the Seattle International Film Festival. Mmm, nothing like a good string of foreign shorts! |

Was pulled along on a whim to see Patrick Watson and the Wooden Arms perform on Tuesday night. I was just looking at a review that compares them to M. Ward and Jeff Buckley, which seems extremely appropriate; more than once during the evening I found myself thinking of M. Ward. A very fun performance band--after being put off by the lights during the first act, I quickly warmed up to their style. The drummer played a set of upside-down pots as well as a xylophone, and the singer did some beautiful things singing into a megaphone and using a plunger as a mute. High point in terms of novel instrumentation, however, was the encore: sung surrounded by the audience, amplified by a speaker-tree-backpack arrangement. All in all, a great surprise for a Tuesday night.
The opener was a fabulous (local? I think) group with three violinists and a very nice sound. Can't seem to track down their name, however....
Tomorrow night I'm seeing Mike Doughty with a gang of Vermonters, who, strangely, I never knew when I was living in Vermont. Funny little world this is like that. This'll be my second Mike show, and the only time I've seen a non-local performer more than once. Now: should I wear my Golden Delicious shirt, or is that trying too hard? |

I just realized, while writing a cover letter, that I can truthfully say that I have over a decade of Photoshop experience. That's pretty freaking sweet. Oh, 5.0, you were so cool back in the day!
Two days ago I re-wrote a version of my resume to include "running prototyping workshops" as a skill, and then immediately found a job listing in which this is a requirement. I WIN. At least, I hope I win.
ETA: Finally decided on a name for the new laptop. He shall be known as Vitaly Chernobyl. The last was Inigo Montoya, so keeping it fictional, just moving genres a bit. |

| What gives, internet? I miss a day, and suddenly Pushing Daisies is ressurected (online, at least)?! Not that I'm complaining, mind. Particuarly because I spent the evening ensuring that two of my friends are getting hooked on Firefly. One of said friends also has Arrested Development in her posession. Canceled shows for the win! |

Watched Plesantville last night w/ the roommate. I'd forgotten how much that movie delves into commentary on fear and change--"no colored allowed". Been a long, long time since I'd watched it, but still a fun flick.
In other "news", I now own a (gasp) white article of clothing. My bathrobe doesn't count, because it was a gift and I don't wear it out of the house. The new item is a backless vest from H&M, since I have a regular, black, vest from there that I just adore. I wore it today and was quickly reminded that the reason I don't wear white is that I don't own a lint roller. And apparently I am a very lint-y person. Ah, well. That's where my roll of packaging tape comes in handy. |

Yesterday was highly productive, in a not-getting-things-done sort of way. I hit up the zoo with Jasmine, where I relearned my huge love for funny looking animals. Tapirs, flamingos, emus, giraffes, all the weird bats and snakes... I love them all. Plus we watched them feed the crocodiles! I mentioned that I can't wait until my "foster sister" becomes a vet, so that she can get a job in a wildlife center and then I'll convince her to let me in for free and allow me to feed and visit the animals. And then today she gets the news that (ta dah!) she's been accepted to vet school in Oregon! In case you're not aware, there are very few veterinary medicine programs in the nation and they are highly selective. So, basically, she's a rock star.
Today was equally enjoyable, both because of that news, and due to the fact that after work I made a delicious salad and sat in the park reading a horror novel. Not quite the correct setting for it, but more comfortable than a rickety, cold house in the dead of winter. |

Ages ago I promised my little brother that I'd make him a stuffed monster. When asked what it should look like, he said it should "be a representation of what I mean to you" (my brother is ridiculous). Around the time he told me this, it was revealed that his name is actually the German word for "beard". This means that should he move to Germany, a conversation would run something like this:
Random German Man: Guten tag.
No-- better yet--
Attractive German Girl: Guten tag! Brother: Hello. Attractive German Girl: What's your name? Brother: Bearded Grave-Man. Attractive German Girl: Wait, what? Brother: My name. It's Bearded Grave-Man.
This would be followed by uncontrollable laughter, and a complete inability for my brother to ever, ever get a date.
Thus begs the question: how do I make a monster with a beard?? |

| I'm getting sick. And when I'm sick, I am not task-oriented. And when I am not focused, I organize things, in a futile attempt to become so. My already obsessively cataloged photo library is, thanks to iPhoto, now even more obsessively cataloged. And tagged. What a terrible idea it was to import my images. |

OK Go 1:34AM |
I can finally cross number one off my "bands I want to see live" list--that would be, of course, OK Go. I've been obsessed with them since shortly after their first album came out, before the Million Ways video went viral. I listened to Oh No obsessively, and often still do. I've got all their B-sides and random records, dredged up from different corners of the internet. They've finally wrapped up recording a third album, and I can not wait until it hits stores. They put on an amazing live performance, play fabulous music and make me a happy, happy little clam.
The most peculiar part of the evening came when I discovered that the bassist has a Twitter, and set aside two tickets at Will Call for anybody who cared to claim them. I called up my friend Abby, since she'd expressed a vague interest in coming, and she decided she'd try her luck. After an hour of waiting in the freezing Seattle evening, she (and our friend Dan) reaped the reward of my nerdiness: free admission to the show.
I'd hoped to be able to thank Tim in person, but they weren't coming out any time soon, so I asked the merch girl to pass along my message. But I'll say it again here: Tim Nordwind, you're an awesome dude.
I can die happy now.
Or at least sleep happy. |

| If you're wondering where I went, well, my computer has died. Died as in, it no longer recognizes its own harddrive. Is that computer alzheimers? In any case, I hope to get a replacement soon, and cross my fingers that I haven't lost too much valuable information (thank you, KAOS, you wonderful portable drive, you!). In the meantime, my mom and younger brother are coming to visit tonight, and we're heading off to visit Other Little Brother. Should be a lovely break, since I've worked the past 14 or so days straight, including several 12-hour days. It's like being in LA again! But actually getting paid (minimally) this time. Whoo. If you need anything in the meantime, call or text me. |

From the inside cover of Green Graphic Design by Brian Dougherty (With Celery Design Collaborative):
This book is printed with low-[Volatile Organic Compound] vegetable-based inks by Thomson-Shore, a [Forest Stewardship Council]-certified printer and a member of the Green Press Initiative. It is printed on 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper made with renewable energy by Mohawk Paper Company. ...And you'd never know by looking at or handling it. This is what all books should aspire to be when they grow up. |

I Survived Eight Years, And All I Got Was This Giant Defecit 9:19PM |
Through my formative years--the past eight, high school and college--I've been living by the words of Mark Twain:
"...the true patriotism, the only rational patriotism, is loyalty to the Nation all the time, loyalty to the Government when it deserves it." --The Czar's Soliloquy Believing in the rights set out in our constitution is difficult when it is blatantly disregarded by those who are elected to uphold it, after all. I am, like many people, thrilled that our new president is a scholar, a speaker, an inspiration, a man of action; that he has an exemplary family, that his life demonstrates his values, that he has overcome many odds and prejudices and won over so many hearts and minds, now eager to assist in the rebuilding of America's economy and reputation. This afternoon it suddenly struck me that I have to re-examine my attitudes towards the government, now that it is on the road to regaining my loyalty. I couldn't be more pleased.
On a sillier note, did anybody else feel it somewhat poetic that Cheney should be in a wheelchair when officially leaving his position as Vice President? Sure, blame moving boxes and strained backs and all, but I think leaving office has crippled his awesome power, meaning that the nation--and elderly hunting partners--once again may breathe easy.
I applied for a contract job to design a stuffed animal, but they had to hire somebody today, before I was able to meet with them and discuss the project. The fellow told me I was "highly qualified" and they'll keep me on file, but it sucks to know that if I had known in time, I could have scored a sweet design gig instead of working retail this afternoon. Lame. Well, I'll just keep my fingers crossed that they do another project like this and/or the person they hired isn't worth bringing back. Jealous? Yes. But! I am a finalist for an actual, salaried design job. I'll be interviewed sometime later this week. Jealous of myself? A little! |

I SEETHE WITH JEALOUSY. 9:36PM |
1. I just sent my resume to a company looking to hire somebody to work on a plush design project. This may be the first position I've ever seen that I am entirely qualified for. Sweet. Now all I need is for them to agree with this assessment.
2. My older brother is going to an Official Inaugural Ball. Beyoncé and Stevie Wonder will perform, among many others. Googling this information, it seems that it is the "Neighborhood Inaugral Ball", the first of the official balls (there are 10) that the Obama/Bidens will be attending. This particular one will be broadcast on ABC. Nathaniel described his getup (a borrowed tux from my cousin's band outfit) as making him look like "James Bond with dreadlocks". If you happen to watch--it seems like I'll have to, now--keep an eye out for him, so that you can shout angrily at the unfairness that he and my cousin will be there, and I will not. |

| The flatmate pointed out that our kitchen is, by far, the best-equipped portion of our apartment. We bought an inexpensive microwave today (it was a display model at Bed, Bath and Beyond and had apparently outlived its usefulness. Never been used, though!) and I received a toaster for Christmas. We've got a fridge, dishwasher, garbage disposal, pots, pans, mugs, teas, a space rack... we're ready for most eventualities, now, but not for visitors to sit down--we're stilling making due with our little loveseat, iron chair and two stools. |

Library trip success is:
- borrowing Douglas Adams audio book to listen to on bus rides! - buying a floating bookshelf, so that despite the fact that I have very few of my books in this state, they will look awesome. I have installed it below an etching by a friend, next to my Serenity travel posters. Nerdy to the max! - Earrings made of Scrabble tiles. Yes.
I love the library. |
